The Self-Loathing of the British (and American) Left

George Orwell

You know, this is pretty interesting, and in truth, more and more it applies to the US as well. It’s not a pretty picture, and it’s not new either. Everytime I read this type of thing I’m reminded of senior British Labor politicians, as well as American ones like Teddy Kennedy visiting Moscow and advising the Soviets on how to work against the interests of the free world, and especially Reagan and Thatcher.

It’s often been observed that a certain type of British Lefty hates Britain – and that they reserve particularly hatred for Englishness. Back in 1941 George Orwell made this acute remark:

England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution.

So what’s new? The difference today is that this shame and self-hatred now dominates Left-wing thought, whereas it was once balanced by the decent Left: who were proud to inherit the noble traditions of radical English patriotism.

Evidence for this disease is all around us, but shows up particularly in two red-button issues-of-the-day: the independence referendum, and the appalling revelations from Rotherham.

First, Scotland. The latest polls show that the United Kingdom is close to breaking up. This is a remarkable state of affairs when you consider that, a year ago, polls were two to one against partition. How has this occurred? Because we have allowed the British Labour party to lead the No debate.

This was a disastrous decision, given that, as Orwell noted, Labourites and Lefties revile and deride so many of the things perceived as quintessentially British. Take your pick from the monarchy, the flag, the Army, the history of rampant conquest, the biggest empire in the world, the supremacy of the English language, anyone who lives in the countryside, the national anthem, the City of London, the Royal Navy, a nuclear deterrent, the lion and the unicorn, duffing up the French, eating loads of beef – all this, for Lefties, is a source of shame. …

The self-loathing of the British Left is now a problem for us all – Telegraph Blogs.

Must really suck to be them, I think.

Seems no one can converse any more. Old definitions are meaningless. Years ago I tried to figure why things are what they are with the definitions of radical, liberal, conservative, reactionary.
That’s like looking in my Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary in ’59 for definition of “spacecraft”.
And this is, paraphrasing ’cause I can’t put my finger on that dictionary right now…imaginary flying machine able to fly past earths atmosphere into outer space.

Where now we would define it as “a Prius full of liberals”, seems like times do change! 🙂

A great comeback comment. Capt. Kirk will sell them discount gas on the trip to Mars, via Priceline. 🙂

Well I mean I voted in Florida last Tuesday for a pretty flat bunch of choices. I had listened to a fellow on our local radio contending for incumbent Jeff Miller’s place in Congress. Twice the radio host asked him where he was to speak to a gathering. Contender couldn’t remember the name of the place and had to ask the host for the name of the place, twice! I admit it’s confusing as it used to be Country Kitchen, then Red Barn, then…now… heck… forget myself. Miller won easily.
So I voted, no senate choices here, but I will be inflated to keep peckerwood Crist out in ’14. I hope… and my area will do its part.

I don’t really get the purpose of pingback. No comment on the post? Drifting was an interesting read, but historically…the English wiped out the North American natives with smallpox?
But as one comment there said.. I be.” too archaic and antiquated to run with the wind”.

Pingbacks are a note that it was referenced. On that article it was one of the other articles that she picked from a list that is presented that the software thinks is related, it wasn’t very close, was it?

Also if I reference an article from here or elsewhere, (link it) it will generate a pingback in their comments. It’s simply an acknowledgement.

I like her pictures, the article struck me as rather superficial. I don’t think there were many Spaniards or Englishmen sitting around 400 years ago saying, “If we give the natives smallpox, we can take over.” But that is what they teach some places today.

🙂 Yep. Me to. I just learned I been paying for Starz and Encore on cable for couple years. May watch a movie. I haven’t found a page telling what comes on when yet. Hate to get in on middle of what is usually an awful movie anyways. But I’ll see.
So let’s just have a good day. We can worry about tomorrow the next day!
