So, many of us will be skipping out of work early today, to get a head start on Memorial Day weekend. I’m sympathetic, working hard does require recharging the batteries on occasion. But it should never occlude the reason for the break.

That’s especially true for Memorial Day, which until World War I was called Decoration Day. It is the day set aside to remember our war dead, originally the one-sixth of our population that were casualties of the War Between the States. A good name for a war that was far from civil. We’ll be talking about it this weekend.

But it is also the fifth anniversary of the death of another soldier this week, and I’ve read very little about it. Gone down the memory hole, especially in America, but in the UK as well. And he deserves better than that.

That soldier was Drummer Lee Rigby, and he was on his way home from Woolwich Arsenal in south London to his four-day-old son, when he was butchered by Islamic terrorists on the street, said terrorists then proceeding to hold court with passers-by until the police showed up 20 minutes later. Not the Met’s best day.

Well, I called them terrorists, but in truth, they’re trash, with less honor than the Afghan women that Kipling wrote about.

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
         So-oldier of the Queen!

Mark Steyn had something to say about it, as well.

British lions come up lambs in Woolwich

On Wednesday, Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a man who had served Queen and country honorably in the hell of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, emerged from his barracks on Wellington Street, named after the Duke thereof, in southeast London. Minutes later, he was hacked to death in broad daylight and in full view of onlookers by two men with machetes who crowed “Allahu akbar!” as they dumped his carcass in the middle of the street like so much road kill.

As grotesque as this act of savagery was, the aftermath was even more unsettling. The perpetrators did not, as the Tsarnaev brothers did in Boston, attempt to escape. Instead, they held court in the street gloating over their trophy, and flagged down a London bus to demand the passengers record their triumph on film. As the crowd of bystanders swelled, the remarkably urbane savages posed for photographs with the remains of their victim while discoursing on the iniquities of Britain toward the Muslim world. Having killed Drummer Rigby, they were killing time: It took 20 minutes for the somnolent British constabulary to show up. And so television viewers were treated to the spectacle of a young man, speaking in the vowels of south London, chatting calmly with his “fellow Britons” about his geopolitical grievances and apologizing to the ladies present for any discomfort his beheading of Drummer Rigby might have caused them, all while drenched in blood and still wielding his cleaver.

If you’re thinking of getting steamed over all that, don’t. Simon Jenkins, the former editor of theTimes of London, cautioned against “mass hysteria” over “mundane acts of violence.”

That’s easy for him to say. Woolwich is an unfashionable part of town, and Sir Simon is unlikely to find himself there of an afternoon stroll. Drummer Rigby had less choice in the matter. Being jumped by barbarians with machetes is certainly “mundane” in Somalia and Sudan, but it’s the sort of thing that would once have been considered somewhat unusual on a sunny afternoon in south London — at least as unusual as, say, blowing up eight-year-old boys at the Boston Marathon. It was “mundane” only in the sense that, as at weddings and kindergarten concerts, the reflexive reaction of everybody present was to get out their cell phones and start filming.

Once, long ago, I was in an altercation where someone pulled a switchblade, and ever since have been mindful of Jimmy Hoffa’s observation that he’d rather jump a gun than a knife. Nevertheless, there is a disturbing passivity to this scene: a street full of able-bodied citizens being lectured to by blood-soaked murderers who have no fear that anyone will be minded to interrupt their diatribes. In fairness to the people of Boston, they were ordered to “shelter in place” by the governor of Massachusetts. In Woolwich, a large crowd of Londoners apparently volunteered to “shelter in place,” instinctively. Consider how that will play when these guys’ jihadist snuff video is being hawked around the bazaars of the Muslim world. Behold the infidels, content to be bystanders in their own fate.

To the Slaughter

Maybe that’s why nobody in authority wants to remember him, it was one of the British elites worst public hours, and that’s not a bad reason for the rest of us to remember it either, Could that be so, Prime Minister May, then the Home Secretary. Nor is the US government any better really, as Boston would show us.

But I for one will drink a toast this weekend to Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Fusiliers, and to all like him, even if there are damned few left.

At the risk of getting a lot of guff, the people who committed that barbarous act of sinful murder are not Britons. I don’t care if they have British passports and British birth certificates. I don’t care if their parents do. I don’t care if English is the only language they speak and they have never set foot outside of England. None of those things makes them British and it’s time we stopped conflating speaking English and using an i-Phone with being an British or American. They are not the same thing.

Anyone who commits an act like that in the name of Islam is an a traitor and should be treated as such. After due legal process, they should be publicly stripped of their citizenship and executed. PERIOD.

You won’t get any guff from me, or likely anyone else here on that statement. Simply what I and most American believe.

Execution for them wouldn’t trouble me in the slightest, although life without parole would also work, but I fear Britain is not up to that.

No, very few of our politicians are sufficiently patriotic and aware of the contradiction inherent in treating Muslims who sign up to shari’a as British citizens. The two are mutually exclusive.

Come on Mid-Terms. Real justice obstructionists be going out from the Congress. You know, those real enemies of civilization. 🙂

The more stories of injustice I read about the state of things in the UK the less I am inclined to count them amongst the rank of civilized nations. It is quite sad to watch our old ally degenerate into a barbarous totalitarian state before our eyes. At this rate, it won’t be long before there will be no way to ally ourselves with their totalitarian government.

The people best quit working and go on strike, gathering en masse in the streets, until this regime is finished . . . otherwise I fear it may be too late for our English speaking cousins across the Atlantic.

I’m tending the same way, even though I know there are many, like Nicholas, who are just as angry about it as we are.

The problem is that if the Tories fall, it will be Corbyn, and he is worse than Clapper, never met a terrorist he didn’t like, Irish, Islamic, whatever, but especially communist. Hard to know what to do in that situation.

We need to exercise caution on the other site, no reason to hurt our friends, who I think are just as appalled, and are much more vulnerable, as we’ve seen.

        I have a solution.

Let us do an immigrant exchange. We will trade them all our muslims, MS13 “animals” and other such radicals to England in exchange for true Englishmen. Once completed we can cut all ties to the island nation of the Mideast and enforce a travel ban on them like we do with other terrorist nations.

I like it and think a fair number of them would as well. Of course, they love Britain, especially England, but more and more, a fair number of them see us as the true heirs.Breaks my heart really, but you know they are where we were in 2013, they need a Trump, but their parties are all pretty much controlled by the elite, and PC runs amuck.

I like it too. And as the true Englishmen wouldn’t except government welfare, our other churches, those not catering to illegals, could give them assistance until they get back on their feet in their new home.

Indeed. Problem solved. Though there would be another small task: removing them from the Security Council of the UN and giving us a double vote. After all, we pay for UN anyway; we ought to get at least 2 votes.

Or just quit paying and repossess the land, good spot for a hotel! I think the old League building are still there in Switzerland. Eminent Domain can be a good thing.

That would suit me just fine. In fact, the laws governing the UN need updating. I wouldn’t allow any totalitarian government on the Security Council to veto anything; only democratic nations. It would serve as an incentive for the globalists to fix their governments so that they might have veto power.
